The way you talk or write to a friend or family member will often be much different from how you write or talk to your instructor or employer. Effective communication is powerful and can lead to opportunities and stepping stones to success. Reflect on the some of the similarities and differences between informal and formal communication and then start by answering questions 1 and 2 below.

1. In your own words (at least 3-4 sentences), define formal and informal language.
Formal language is used mostly in a professional way. If I were talking or emailing my professors, coworkers, or my boss I would use formal language. If I were talking to family or friends, I don’t need to speak in a professional way. I can use informal language when talking to people that are close to

Identify at least 3 of the errors that you see in Thomas’s response. Explain why these are errors are inappropriate and what you would do to correct the communication (at least 5-6 sentences). Thomas addressed his professor by her first name, which should never be done unless she has given her permission. He also uses all capitalization, which is shouting. He should not shout in an email that calls for formal language. Thomas is also very demanding in his email. He tells his professor what to do, instead of explaining the mistake he had made, and asking her if there was a way to still receive points for his work.

This would be devastating news to hear, but it would be even worse if it were delivered through email or text. Stacy deserves to hear an explanation on why she is being terminated. She also deserves the common decency of being told to her face in

It is a person-to-person contact, it includes everyday exchange that may be formal or informal and can take place anywhere by means of words, sounds, facial expression, gestures and postures. To take responsibility for your own feelings, rely on I language rather than you language. I language owns thoughts and feelings and does not blame them on others (Wood 125).…
