Inform 7 Group Project

The Inform 7 group project was a unique experience that exposed me to a new style of writing and programming, and group work. In order to successfully complete the project we had to communicate effectively, identify roles, and evaluate our work as a whole.

The first step of our project was developing an idea. While developing the idea, all of us agreed that incorporating the Georgia Tech campus would make the game more relatable, engaging, and original. Our game’s basic theme is preventing a nuclear disaster at Georgia Tech, which is triggered by an old supercomputer in a mysterious tunnel under what is now The Clough Commons building. We were able to take a relatively common game theme (disaster prevention) and spice it up by incorporating a Georgia Tech based plot. In short, the player discovers a mysterious tunnel through some clues and finds their way into the supercomputer tunnel, where they complete a quiz and release a virus which threatens to release nuclear material, endangering the whole Atlanta region. They must follow a set of clues and navigate through additional rooms to avert disaster.

Next, we had to condense room descriptions and plot details in order to make the game development easier. Even after condensing the descriptions, during the

As a group we identified our best programmer (Dean) and the rest of us made sure to make the storyline and plot as concise and possible so that the coding process would be easier. I also applied something that I learned from the previous project to the presentation of this project. In the previous project I learned that an infographic or visual aid is supposed to have minimal text. As a group we applied that to our powerpoint presentation and kept it informative without being overwhelming. We also were able to work well under the time constraints of this project and our project progressed from an idea to a draft to a game

What is your team’s approach to completing the project? This project is difficult for anyone to complete in an online class setting such as this. However, this is not because of any task that is assigned for this project, but because this assignment forces us to learn to effectively communicate with each other to complete a common goal. We began communicating early this week regarding what we need to accomplish in order to complete this project, and we have come to a conclusion.…

The first step they took was visiting schools and having children draw their dream playground. Next, they had all reveal their ideas to the builder; once gathering everything they incorporated it all into one big project which they later reveled it. In opening it to the community as a whole I think it really helped in the process of exciting people and having they come in to help create something that would be utilized by them all. Something I thought needed improvement was in the handling of volunteer, it seemed like they either had too many of them or did not know how to equally spread them out. Leading to lots of people just standing around and doing nothing at…

It also turned out to be one of the more challenging group projects I’ve ever worked on at the University of Washington, not only because of the task but also because of the group dynamic. Looking back on that project, I think it could have been a lot smoother had we designated very specific roles much earlier in the quarter and had one administrator to put together everyone’s work and to make sure people were actually doing their assigned work. That project was also the first time I’ve worked on a project that required a significant amount of design creativity, in which everyone had to express and argue for their ideas, while also always keeping the client in mind. As for, Maple Valley, coming into the practicum having a better idea of what was expected of our group, I felt much more confident in our work. Coming in and being able to ask Matt Torpey the right questions also got us off to a good start, I think that was one of our bigger issues winter quarter is that our group didn’t even know what it was we wanted to know.…

While society may broadly appreciate and desire educational objectives that can help people lead healthy lives, the exact approaches necessary to reach these desired outcomes are not well understood. Mandigo and Anderson (2003) highlight the need for educators "to develop ways to foster these skills and understandings across numerous types of activities" (p. 8) as an important step towards making this desire a reality. Despite the fact that the initial digital prototype was not entirely working, the designers emulated game play by choosing diffusion activities and selecting members of staff. By observing the interaction they noticed that "players would need to move the mouse from one side of the monitor to the other for every single turn in the game" (Lara, Myers, Frick, Aslan, & Michaelidou, 2010, p. 46).…

In the beginning, it was bright and people seemed to want to do great work for the project. That feeling stayed consistent throughout the project, though some work effort did not. We immediately set up a meeting in order to discuss what we were going to do and how we were going to do it. It was during week one, when we had the very first meeting only four of the eight group members showed up.
