Self-knowledge is fundamental because it teaches how to manage our attitudes in leadership, entrepreneurship and even team membership. In the article “What’s Your Influencing Style” by Chris Musselwhite and Tammie Plouffe, we learned why was of great importance for us to know what is our predominant style of influence or which one we feel more comfortable with. Our influencing style helps us in determining how we exert our power and influence on others and also aids in understanding the other influencing styles (5). So, it is very common for businesspeople to take their guests to social events, lunches, dinners, etc. to create bonding and close business negotiations. Equatoguineans prefers oral communication, face to face, rather than putting everything in writing. The written instructions and the controls are unpopular, since they imply mistrust. At some point being introverted was considered as a psychological disorder. In Africa, extroverted people tend to be better valued, that characteristic of an individual that allows them to have almost non-stop social interactions is very useful when the opposite is sometimes even perceived as hostile. My society glorifies extroversion and puts them on a pedestal those who expose too much and are energetic. I am an introvert who finds it difficult to express ideas and opinions in public and who if not approached, does not create interpersonal relationships for fear of being rejected. I am aware that both personality traits I mentioned above are weakness and probably barriers to my success but it was not up till I read the book “Power: Why Some Have it and Others Don’t” that I realized how it really affected my chances of success. I learned to value myself, understand the concept of power and influence and how such could benefit me if use appropriately. I believe after taking this course, I will make better choices about my life and take advantage of my influence and power in interpersonal relationships. Even though I am good at persuading people through bridging and rationalizing and I possess legitimate power (thanks to my education background) which all could benefit me in my aspiring my goal to become an agribusiness entrepreneur, I understand that is not enough and I need to work hard and understand the power dynamics of my country and specifically of my profession.
