Since people chose to be a member they take the identity with pride. The church is a strong public authority figure that people respect so how could they be wrong. The oppression can run deep through society because the church has imposed it in the community it teaches to. When oppression of homosexual activity come from the Catholic Church once, it is getting passed down and taught to younger generations. Oppression only has to show its face one time for it to last a lifetime. The Orthodox Church shows the highest numbers of intolerance for any “other” identity than any other practice in Europe (Spina, 39). Even though there are variances in teachings from church to church, most of the Catholic Church is taught the same. This leads to masses of people believing and “knowing” the same thing. People tend to go to a higher authority and believe their word as the truth. This rule goes the same for complex issues such as sexuality. Conflicts between homosexuals and the Catholic Church can be seen throughout history. The lives of any Catholic homosexual are impacted by the Catholic Church. The Church has influential power which allows its message to be spread throughout society. The younger generation is less likely to be influenced by the Church as our society is becoming more secular in nature.
