Social media itself is not a negative, but there are negative issues that lead to serious consequences. Many teenagers use social media for many different uses, “seventy-five percent of teenagers in America currently have profiles on social networking sites,” (Ramasubbu 1). When many teenagers use social media it leads to bad influences and peer pressure. Teens are much more vulnerable to giving into peer pressure because of “evils such as Facebook depression, sexting, and cyberbullying,” (Ramasubbu 2). These are some examples of dangerous actions that happen on social media. Many forms of cyberbullying have been used such as trolling, direct threatening, and unpleasant messages. Most reasons people cyberbully are due to “hatred, bigotry, racism, misogyny, or just simple bickering,” (Ramasubbu 3). The internet tracks a digital footprint for everyone. Anything posted on the internet will still be out there and there is no way to erase it. This is a threat to teens because if they make a mistake, that mistake will always be out there for anyone to see. Sharing personal data can be a disaster waiting to happen, it can lead to stalking and even something as serious as identity theft. One consequence for using social media can be depression. We get jealous when we see pictures of new cars or houses. It makes it hard for us to realize what we have and be thankful because be always see other people with more or better things. Social media is like a mask that covers everyone’s true feelings. Most are pictures of people smiling and having a good time because we want other people to think that we have a good life, when in reality, we may be struggling. This is a problem, especially for teens because they are “developmentally vulnerable,” (Ramasubbu 3). It is hard to tell when someone has a problem because their social media account may not reflect on their real life or emotions. This can lead to misunderstandings or even cyber bullying. Any kind of bullying is a big deal, but cyberbullying is the most common because it is the easiest. People can hide behind a computer screen say whatever they want. Social media is considered one of the “best ways to stay informed,” (Agrawal 1) because of all of the benefits such as being able to keep in touch with your friends.. Overall, social media is a positive asset to our lives; it is a big part of our lives. We will always have social media, so why not use it?
