As years passed, my mother and father got divorced. This lead to my mother’s decision to pack up our things and move to Swan River, MB. She felt that it would benefit us, as it is a quieter town with a lower crime rate. She always wanted us to grow up feeling safe and secure. We were able to adjust quite well to our new surroundings and community after a while. I was just entering grade six when we moved and remembered some downsides. The school environment wasn’t as diverse in personalities, cultures, or interests as the city was. And I experienced a lot of bullying due to my ethnicity. But that experience, even though it was negative, allowed me to fully embrace my culture regardless of what others said about it. I began to show others how proud I was to be a Metis student. I have always been taught that no matter what you should support and be there for your family through thick and thin. It is somewhere you can feel secure and good to be around. My family does an excellent job at doing this for me, they have always been behind me one hundred percent of my journey so far. Providing encouraging and endearing words of advice that lift my spirit and help me stay determined. My co-workers in the past and presently have also helped me stay confident in my decision. As sad it was for them to see me go when I left jobs, they understood and made me feel important and cared for. It feels great to have such a strong support system, because when times get hard and when I feel like I can’t do it anymore.
