Media is an important factor in daily life. I think it is important for society as a whole to understand how the media effects the way they make decisions and how they think, specifically when it comes to political and civic engagement. This subject is important to me because my major is communication. As a communication major it is important to understand the relationship between the media and society because one day I could be the one creating the media. I narrowed my search down to how it effects society in terms of political and civic engagement because my minor is political science and I would like to be in the field of politics. The article had a short notes section about Boulianne to give her credibility. She has a PhD in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She conducts her research on media use, public opinion, and political and civic engagement. She won the Best Paper award from the Communication and Information Technologies section of the American Sociological Association in 2013. The study consists the effects of social media on society and is backed up by research and numbers. The article I am using from this website is “The News Media and New Media: The Internet’s Effect on Civic Engagement” by Jed D. Brensinger, Rebecca Gullan and Janis Chakars. The article contained a brief reference of each authors credentials. Jed Brinsinger received his Bachelor of science in psychology at Gwynedd-Mercy College, Rebecca Gullan, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Gwynedd Mercy University and licensed clinical psychologist, and Janis Chakars, PhD, is Assistant Professor, Communication Program Coordinator, and Chair of the Division of Language, Literature, and Fine Arts at Gwynedd Mercy University. The article is layed out very well and is clear to understand, some charts and tables are provided to back up information in the article.
