Media is an important factor in daily life. I think it is important for society as a whole to understand how the media effects the way they make decisions and how they think, specifically when it comes to political and civic engagement. This subject is important to me because my major is communication. As a communication major it is important to understand the relationship between the media and society because one day I could be the one creating the media. I narrowed my search down to how it effects society in terms of political and civic engagement because my minor is political science and I would like to be in the field of politics. The website was pretty basic with a white background and no eye catching graphics, but one thing did catch my attention. At the top of the webpage there were badges for Harvard Kennedy School, Carnegie Corporation of New York, and Knight Foundation. Curious about what this badges meant I looked into that the website actually was. I found out that it is resource website for journalist and students. The sources on the website must be empirically bases, peer-reviewed, the product of a major university, government body, or non partisan research organization. The article I am using from this website is “The News Media and New Media: The Internet’s Effect on Civic Engagement” by Jed D. Brensinger, Rebecca Gullan and Janis Chakars. The article contained a brief reference of each authors credentials. Jed Brinsinger received his Bachelor of science in psychology at Gwynedd-Mercy College, Rebecca Gullan, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Gwynedd Mercy University and licensed clinical psychologist, and Janis Chakars, PhD, is Assistant Professor, Communication Program Coordinator, and Chair of the Division of Language, Literature, and Fine Arts at Gwynedd Mercy University. The article is layed out very well and is clear to understand, some charts and tables are provided to back up information in the article.
