Music’s Influence of Intimate Partner Violence
Domestic violence happens every day whether we hear about it on the news or it’s kept behind closed doors. Psychologically speaking, there must be certain triggers that affect the mind of the abuser to commit such acts to his or her spouse. For example, alcohol, having psychological disorders, and jealously are triggers that could lead to violence such like in these songs “Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf,” “Midnight Show,” and “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine.” In “Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf,” the song describes a drunken abusive boyfriend who begs his girlfriend not to leave him. When he isn’t happy or “satisfied,” he drinks and gets physical with her instead of talking through their issues. He

He murders his girlfriend, throws her in the back of the truck, and drives the night away. Throughout the song, the man gives us hints that something isn’t right in his mind and he is aware of it. For example, he says “there’s a hope, but there’s too many people trying to help me cope” which sounded like either schizophrenia or a therapist. He might be talking to someone about his issues, but nothing is helping him. Another example is when he said “there’s something in my head, somewhere in the back said” meaning he might be hearing things in the back of his mind telling him to do something evil. This song resembles numerous cases where the defendant pleas insanity because he claims to have had some voices telling him or her to commit the act. In the finale song “Jenny was a friend of mine,” a man is being interrogated by police about his friend being murdered. He tells police that not only did he see her that night, but they had been arguing over her leaving him. When I listened to this song, jealously came to mind. He had told her that he loved her and …show more content…
I feel that music has an impact on people’s lives and can help them cope with issues currently happening to them. I can’t really say that music influences intimate partner violence because I personally haven’t heard of any cases with a testimony stating “music made me do it.” Certain lyrics like in Eminem’s song “I throw you one the couch, punch you in the mouth, fist fight till we turn the mother out” could

In true 1990s grunge style, the song relies on “loud-quiet-loud” dynamics. The verses are quiet and understated, while the chorus increases in tempo and loudness. It also makes full use of J. Mascis’ laconic, nasally drawl to contrast with the fullness of the sound. The song also plays with consonance and dissonance; while the verses are consonant, the guitar in the chorus becomes much more distorted and therefore more dissonant. Although the song is homophonic, the primary melodic line is not driven by the vocals.…

There are issues that accompany civilization, one being male dominance. We have updated our train of thought into a more tolerant society and came to an agreement that women are as capable as men. Still, women live under societies’s and men's shadow that has been casted for centuries. Brent Staple’s essay “Just Walk on By” addresses the the power men have over women, referring to it as “male romance with the power to intimidate”(pg.).…

Now when listening to this song, I found it to be on the opposite end of the spectrum from The Who’s “Behind Blue Eyes.” Whereas the subject of The Who’s song seemed to be expressing remorse and sorrow, the subject in Johnny Cash’s song is bemoaning the fact that he is stuck in prison. He freely admits that he shot a man in Reno despite being told by his mother to stay away from guns. He expresses no remorse for his actions, rather he complains about the fact that he is stuck in prison while life outside prison continues without him.…

After finding out his now-ex girlfriend has been unfaithful, he portrays diligence to harass her by narrating his plan of action for revenge in the lyrics, “I’m gonna aim my headlights into your bedroom windows, throw empty beer cans at both of your shadows”. Thus, implying the desensitization of society into perceiving violent portrayals in breakups are of the norm. The binary in this song is that due to his girlfriend cheating he is obligated to act violently to shame the woman, to which he justifies his actions in the lyrics, “You know you broke the wrong heart, baby, you drove me redneck crazy.” His motives are excused supposedly due to his broken heart and plays ‘victim’, where as the real victim is left oppressed. Statistically, women are much more likely to be the target of stalking threats (ARS, 2010), this is reinforced by the ominous lyric, “I’m the kind of guy that shows up at your house at 3a.m.”…

Music is all around us, playing in shopping malls, on television, in elevators, and stored on our personal electronic devices. Music has the ability to change one’s mood to either positive or negative based on the genre and the lyrics a song. To determine if there is a correlation between music genres and deviant behavior, researchers Jeffery Lozon and Moshe Bensimon examines genres as alternative rock, hard rock, heavy metal, hip-hop/rap, punk rock, rock and electronic/techno to see if it influences an individual’s behavior negatively. This song talks about the speaker who is abused by her boyfriend but she stands by him because she loves him. This is similar to when we find out that Mayella was abused by her father but still loves him because well, it’s her father. They both show unhealthy relationships and how bad things can be at home. The mood in both of this song and the book is desperate. They are both desperate for love and will do anything to stay by their family/man.…

Morrison states, “Marketing messages of hate and violence to children sends the signal that violence is widespread and normal, that it is acceptable to abuse women, and that there is glamour in lawlessness” (Morrison). Teens are listening to music that sends the messages that it is okay for men to beat their wives and girlfriends because they are above the law. This has had an extremely negative effect in the black community. As stated by McWhorter, “Rap music is harmful to the black community because it links to racism, violence, and misogyny ” (McWhorter). In “Rap Music and Rap Audiences,” it states that “many scholars note that some rap lyrics attempt to objectify, devalue, or subjugate African American women through insults and name calling” (Dixon).…

Senseless Crime in Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” Through the use of first-person narrative, Bruce Springsteen’s song “Nebraska” recounts the crimes of a murderer leading up to his impending execution. Inspired by the murders of Charles Weather and Caril Anne Fugate (Anonymous), Springsteen positions himself as Charles Weather and his audience as the auditors of the song, allowing them to garner an insight into the perspective of the criminal. The song itself takes on the lyric form of a subgenre of poetry known as the dramatic monologue. Such poems “tend to offer us a window into an entire, complex psychology”…
