Why Do Advertisements Influence People's Behavior?

Great Essays
In today’s modern era the world is full of advertisement it is our environment (Kilbourne 1). It’s all around us on television, internet, radio, and even on billboards and signs. Advertisement influences society and plays a huge role in creating a great impact on people’s behavior. Advertising gives companies a way to expose their products to consumers and maximize their sales Advertising creates needs by making you want something you never probably wouldn’t even care about if it wasn’t introduced to you. Some ads highlight features of the product, but some ads content try to sell something more than the product. There’s a lot of advertising that attempts to associate a product or brand with a certain/particular type of life style. People who classify with that lifestyle, will feel captivated to purchase these products. When you feel very similar to a person, and an advertisement or commercial that shares your same values, you 'll feel more willing to purchase the brand or product, even if it isn 't directly shown that often or obviously in the advertisement. Advertisers want us to believe we are not being influenced by ads, because if we knew that we were being manipulated by these advertisements then they wouldn’t be accepted (Kilbourne 6). I believe advertising not only tries to sell a product but also tries to establish what the social norm should be in society. In the L’Oréal advertisement from January 2015, advertising La Palette Nude eyeshadow, includes a picture of Liya Kebede in a dark grayish background to make her face stand out more. Liya has light brown eyes with long eyelashes. The word “La Palette Nude” is written in caps and white font is written off to the side not to cover any part of her face. Liya Kebede is written in small white font to the bottom left corner. The photo is from her head to her shoulders with her chin resting on a soft fist. Beneath the picture there’s text that reads “Master the Art of Nude, unleash your creativity…with this palette you become the artist” (Allure 7). In the advertisement Liya is clearly not only wearing only eye shadow that’s being advertised, in the photo she clearly has on lipstick, eyeliner, mascara and foundation. The advertisement is not only selling eyeshadow but is also influencing the way women should look, long eyelashes and perfect pore less skin. Makeup is usually worn to enhance beauty and make women feel more confident in themselves but what this advertisement implies is that without this product you aren’t beautiful. Not all women wear makeup but because this advertisement creates a need for women to feel beautiful only by having this product then the non-users might turn over and purchase this product. Liya Kebede is an Ethiopian woman but in this advertisement she is made to look like a European woman. This is a bit racist because not only is she made to change the tone/ color of her skin the makeup is also implying …show more content…
The photo is take from the top of his head to his upper chest with his arm crossing his chest with the watch on. The background is black just like the L’Oréal advertisement so that we just focus on the man and the watch. The man has blue eyes, a chiseled chin and a well-groomed beard. He also has some veins visible on his hand which might lead you to believe he lifts weights and you can assume he is healthy and not obese. The brand name “Michael Kors” is written at the bottom of the advertisement not blocking the watch or the man’s face making it clear that his face should be showing alongside the watch.
In the Michael Kors watch advertisement is conveying the idea that men who buy this watch will look like the man in the picture, super masculine with a chiseled chin and a beard. The advertisement is also persuading you to buy the product because it will make you seem more masculine with veins on your hand indicating you lift weights and is probably buff like the guy in the advertisement and in our society is “fabulously rewarded” (Bordo 1). An assumption is also established by the advertisement that despite being so masculine you must have impossible to achieve perfect

"In Your Face... All Over the Place": Advertising Is Our Environment is all about advertisements and how they influence us. Jean Kilbourne says that the people that produce advertisements try to trick us into believing that we are actually not influenced by the ads that they produce. Kilbourne believes that advertisers benefit from this strategy because their slogans and jingles linger in our minds and keep reminding us of their company. The companies also phrase their slogans and various other words in order to make us feel as if we are too smart to be tricked by them.…

Advertisements can be found all over the city no matter where you look. They can be presented by television commercials, print ads on billboards, Internet websites, and even the radio. The reasoning behind these ads is to persuade and argue why their product is more important than others. Sometimes these arguments can be used to persuade certain ideas that people think are right or wrong, and cause an argument socially, politically, or even religiously. Imagine this, it’s 1 a.m. and rearing to the end of the night with you and your friends.…

Advertisements can have a negative effect especially for the younger population. As a result, this goes to show consumers pay attention to the symbolic values (Law, Wong & Yip, 2012). Moreover, in a recent study (Budgeon 2003; Davis, 2002; Kimmel and Messner, 2004; Vigorito and Curry, 1998) found advertisements have made males more self-conscious about their bodies and appearance and influencing their self-identification through their bodies such as by their fashion, level of fitness, and how they evaluate themselves (Tan, Shaw, Cheng, & Kim, 2013). Advertisements are more detailed for women than for men. Furthermore, women notice the diminutive details in the ads, while men focus on the actual product itself. Magazine advertisements have an understanding men do not want to be perceived by other man as caring too much about their fashion or how they dress.…
