Fifty years ago, it probably would not have been a big deal to pick up an unsuspicious hitchhiker, donate to charity, or investigate a baby carrier sitting on the side of the road. Today, hitchhikers can easily turn on you, many charities are scams, and the baby carrier on the side of the road is a gimmick that gangs do to get people out of their cars. Even though it is important to put others before ourselves, we should never be coerced to helping people when we do not want to. We can be persuaded, yes, but never coerced. People should have the freedom to help those they deem to need it. I should be allowed to drive by that baby carrier on the side of the road while dialing 911 to let the police know the situation. I have the right to be able to choose what I feel to be right and most responsible for. Considering global issues, I am responsible for more than I can comprehend, and until I find another way I cannot end global warming, world hunger, and slavery all in one lifetime; therefore, I will focus my energy in areas that I feel more responsible towards. I will volunteer at the animal shelter but not at a soup kitchen because I feel more connected to the helplessness of animals. I will focus on social issues dealing with those with disabilities and not racial minorities because having a disability is something I have experience with. I will help my old high school band with fundraisers instead of the football team because I understand how expensive instruments are and how important music is to not only myself, but others. Focusing my energy on certain responsibilities and not others does not mean I do not care for my other responsibilities or deny that they are there - it means that there are things that affect me on a personal level to the point that it feels like I am culpable when those I feel responsible for suffer
