Research regarding infidelity has suggested that women and men have different jealousy responses that correspond to different qualities in their relationship. It has been seen that when infidelity occurs in a relationship, men often ask question regarding how sexual the relationship was unlike women who ask questions regarding the emotional part of the relationship. Although research studies have confirmed this idea, criticisms have arisen regarding the nature in which these infidelities were tested. As a result, the researcher of this study sought to study infidelities in a natural setting in order to determine whether women and men have developed different types of jealousy reactions in order to see how detrimental was the infidelity of their partner. The researcher hypothesized that women would be more concerned with the emotion present in the infidelity …show more content…
Coders went through training using four episodes to be able to identify the different responses for each jealousy and to ensure they all agreed. Coders then watched other episodes and coded the cases using a sheet that asked about what happened in that case and which jealousy, either emotional or sexual, was expressed. Three or more coders were used for each episode and if their answers did not all agree, the majority answer was chosen. Coders were also asked to answer a question regarding the presence of either jealousy type when the victim asked questions.
The results of this study showed that victims who were females questioned infidelity quality in 45 of their cases and males 30 of their cases. The hypothesis of this study was also supported confirming that males are concerned more about how sexual was the infidelity, 57%, and women are more concerned about the emotion present in the infidelity, 71%. Sex-differentiation was also found to be significant among the response

(Maner & Shackelford, 2007). David Buss' study is one of the most pronounced in jealousy study as he took 202 undergrad students and asked a series of infedelity questions and asked which would upset them more, like mentioned above. 60% of males chose sexual infedelity and only 17% of females with that option chosen, whereas 83% of females chose emotional infedelity (Buss, Larsen, Westen & Semmelroth,…

Effrosyni Adamopoulou published a paper creatively titled “New facts on infidelity” in 2013. The paper, as one might suspect, is a short article detailing new, empirical facts about infidelity. It glosses over the brief economic examinations of infidelity in the past, and addresses what has been lacking in these past examinations. Adamopoulou makes several statements about infidelity; one that it is an activity that peaks in the summer, two that in America men and women cheat about equally, and that the socioeconomic status of an adulterer is not related the likelihood of extramarital affairs. The article is brief, blessedly, and the author is very plain in their speech, and the findings are not only simple, but hold up under scrutiny.…

Infidelity in marriage is viewed as modern in this day and age. The marriage between the gods Aphrodite and Hephaestus could be considered modern due to their countless affairs, resemblance to modern media, similarity to celebrity cheating scandals through pictures and artwork, recent psychologist reasons as to why couples cheat, and their connection to current infidelity statistics. First of all, Aphrodite had countless affairs while being married to Hephaestus. Aphrodite’s well-known affairs were with the war god Ares, the wine god Dionysius, and a mortal man named Anchises. Aphrodite was always in love with the war god Ares.…

Lewis, Alvertis D wrobel eng 098 Oct, 15, 15 Well I’m sure we all have heard of the myth, of why men and women cheat on each other. But I’m here to put that to the test and see, if the relationship between the myth and facts are the same, or different. In a sense to see if that relationship of opinion and information should continue or breakup. To help me prove my point I took information on a social experiment done by counselor Gary m Neumann surveyed 200 cheating and no cheating husbands to get at the real reasons behind men's infidelity.…

Drawing on evolutionary theory, I hypothesized that physical infidelity leads to more mate abandonment behavior in men than emotional infidelity, while emotional infidelity leads to more mate abandonment behavior in women than physical infidelity. Previous research has demonstrated sex differences in emotional responses to infidelity. Men demonstrate greater jealousy in response to a partner's physical infidelity, whereas women demonstrate greater jealousy in response to a partner's emotional infidelity (Buss et al., 1992). These sex differences in jealousy are further supported by Trivers' (1972) Parental Investment Theory, which states that a man's reproductive fitness is endangered by sexual infidelity, and a woman's reproductive fitness…

The study examined the cheating from the two different types that have been found to be most prevalent which is the emotional and sexual aspects. This study used the social structure theory to base their experiment on. “The social structure theory states that most of the sex differences in mating preferences occur because most societies direct men into more advantaged social and economic positions compared to women” (Kennair& Norideide& Stronen,2011). Due to this the theory is trying to say that much of the sex differences in mating preferences will shrink or disappear in societies enforcing gender…

The aim of the study was to further delve into the concept of jealousy occurring differently within females as it does in males, focusing on evolutionary psychology, in regard to childbearing and loss of resources through infidelity. Participants were given two hypothetical scenarios, one involving sexual infidelity and the other involving emotional infidelity, and were asked to identify which one they found more distressing. The results indicated emotional infidelity was perceived as more upsetting for women and men found sexual infidelity more distressing. This was shown not only in their voiced responses but in their physiological responses as well. This presented a further understanding of human relationships and adaptation that has occurred to cause these subconscious physiological responses to emotional triggers, and how they differ between men and…

When it comes to conflict in intimate relationships, the way in which partners engage in resolving it can either strengthen or weaken their relationship. Relationships that form may inherit conflict due to different cultural, familial, religious, and value backgrounds. In regard to intimate relationships, there are important areas of communication where conflict has a greater chance of arising, such as inefficient communication, incompatible sexual values, personality, other relationships, drug addiction, and opposing expectations of gender roles, (Madden & Janoff-Bulman, 1981; Schaap, Buunk, & Kerkstra, 1988) “. In 1987, Hazan and Shaver published a study that took the idea of romantic relationships and redefined them as attachment relationships.…

In Othello, the reader is introduced to infidelity in the ancient Italy once again proving there is nothing new in this world. It is clear this was written in a patriarchal society, because the story has the message women will commit adultery and man will too but that’s not big deal. Almost three years ago, The National Health and Social Life Survey found that 4% of married men, 16% of cohabiting men, and 37% of dating men engaged in acts of sexual infidelity compared to 1% of married women, 8% of cohabiting women, and 17% of women in dating relationships (Lalasz & Weigel 1079-1083). According to these findings men are the main ones committing acts of infidelity in the modern world; men are still pushed towards sexual activity while women are…
