Growing up in North Carolina you become aware of your race and ethnicity at a young age. In smaller towns you can still find a store or diner that has white only signs. I grew up in Raleigh which is the capital of North Carolina with a diverse population, but race is still quite evident. I attended a predominantly white elementary and middle school in North Carolina. In elementary school you saw the divide in approximately 3rd or 4th grade, and I noticed my circle of friends all looked like me. As I advanced to middle school my friend circle expanded but everyone still looked like me.
