As Spring rolls along, we enter into a period of loveliness: a warm season of blooming happiness. How lovely is it? So lovely that the love brings upon us a “transitory sickness” that comes with spring fever. It is the “darling month when everyone throws self-control away” and we become victims to the loveliness, and dive into the mirage of infatuation. Jenijoy La Belle’s article, “Loofah Is,” explores the fundamental meaning of love and the insanity that derives from it. “Loofah Is,” displays the artificial meaning of love through its known stereotypes, yet effectively captures the true, unaltered idea of infatuation. For instance, when Belle writes, “infatuation-that early stage of attraction when we’re carried away by extravagant passion and do foolish things.” We are so caught up with the idea of love and what it is supposed to be like, and feel like, that we lose the capability to act rationally. Relationships make people unintentionally act different in certain circumstances when a significant other is around. After reading this article, I realized that what Belle argues in her piece is something that I see in my day-to-day life. Recently, one of my close friends and her boyfriend were going through a rough time because they were having difficulties in trusting one another. Although my friend knew it was a little too much to do, she had to login into his Facebook account in order to reassure herself that everything was fine. Generally, if this were a situation with a friend rather than a boyfriend, the approach would have been different. Instead of invading her boyfriend’s privacy and sneaking around, she would have been straightforward by reaching out to her friend, and simply getting down to explaining what was bothering her. Although it was a different situation, in the text, Belle discusses how both love and infatuation causes us to lose sight of reality. It also expresses the idea of being in love and the extreme measures that ultimately come with it. All of these false impressions of love are widely spread because of how the media demonstrates “the ideal” path for love through the various forms of artwork and expression. Specifically, this idea plays a major role in movies, causing society to have naturally high expectations towards relationships. When love does not follow the course that one may have in mind, it causes people to approach the situation in an irrational way. At the end of the day love is love, it will always be something different to other people.
