Q: Describe the ideal environment for an infant room. How does the environment support nurturing care and proper stimulation?
I believe that the ideal environment for an infant classroom should be as peaceful and as serene as possible. This can include soft voices and/or music as well as no loud noises. I feel like the actual classroom should be aesthetically pleasing as well but also soothing at the same time. What I mean by this is that the room should be filled with multiple play areas, but shouldn’t be overwhelming with how much material is in the room. The walls should also be painted all one color and this color should be calming and natural. This will provide a relaxing effect if an infant starts to become fussy. If it is sunny outside, not a whole of light inside may be needed. If it is cloudy and not light outside, standard lighting inside should be prominent. I say “standard” (for lack of a better word) because infants may react negatively to extremely bright and harsh lights. Warmer lights may work too. If no infants in the room are sick and if the temperature is at a decent degree, I would suggest opening a window to circulate fresh air throughout the room. Mats should also be included in the room for these physical activities. The classroom should also include lots of soft and cozy furniture as such as pillows and bean bags, blankets, no sharp objects whatsoever, small board books for the infants to thumb through, and a variety of fine motor related toys as such as balls, blocks, play dough and other manipulatives for them to play with. I’ve been in an infant classroom where several cribs were intact for napping and some of the infants had stuffed animals like teddy bears with them when napping or during play
