Physical development is the growth of gross (and fine) motor skills and how infants & toddlers use them. Gross motor skills include running, jumping, throwing, and walking. Cognitive development involves thought processes, storing, decoding, memorizing, etc. The connection between physical and cognitive development is that the infant or toddler must think about what or who they want and how they going to get it. Simply put, their cognitive development must be strong enough in order for their bodies to react. If they don’t think or stimulate some type of thought process about what they want, the result will end up with the child crying or feeling emotionally distressed.
