Synoptic Narrative In Matthew's Gospel

Great Essays
In Theology we had to do a research project on one of the Synoptic Gospels. I chose to do a research paper on the infancy narrative in Matthew’s Gospel. The term infancy narrative is used described the birth and early life of Jesus the Messiah. The infancy narrative in Matthew’s Gospel is broken into many parts; including: the genealogy of Jesus, the conception and birth of Jesus, the visit of the Magi, the flight to Egypt and massacre of the infants, and the return from Egypt. I will be discussing all of these events in greater detail, as well as an excerpt from my uncle, also known as Deacon Francis of St. Mary Magdalene in Abbeville, LA. Before getting into details of my research, I am going to start my paper with a brief introduction of …show more content…
Matthew’s Gospel started with the genealogy of Jesus, also known as Jesus’ family tree. The genealogy started with Abraham and ended with David, who is the father of Joseph, better known as Jesus’ father. The conception of Jesus occurred when an angel came to Mary one night and placed in her a child through the Holy Spirit. At the time Mary and Joseph were not married, but she was betrothed to him. This act, if it became noticed would be considered adultery, so Joseph has a plan to silently dismiss Mary, so that she would not be disgraced. The angel later on came into Joseph’s dream and told him to marry Mary and take her into his home, “for it is through the holy Spirit that the child was conceived in her” (Mt 1:20). Joseph did as he was told and took Mary as his wife. When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, it was still the time of King Herod. The magi reported to King Herod that there was a newborn king upon the Jews, so King Herod sent the magi out to find the king and to pay him homage. King Herod found that Jesus was a threat to his reign, so he was trying to locate him and have him killed. Joseph received notice of this news from the angel, so they fled to Egypt until the angel said it was okay to come back. King Herod was furious when he discovered the magi outsmarted him, so he had …show more content…
Mary was engaged to Joseph when she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. In this past time it was a social disgrace to be have a child out of wedlock. According to Brown, Galilean marriage customs were stricter than those of Judean practices. In Galilee the wife must be taken into her husband’s home as a virgin, but in Judea, it was common for wife to come through the husband’s home in-between their engagement. Joseph and Mary’s home were in Bethlehem of Judea, but by the tone set for the story, Joseph and Mary practices the customs of Galilee. When Joseph discovered Mary was pregnant, and not from him, he was going to call off the engagement. Joseph was considered to be a “righteous man” (Mt. 1:19) because he was no going to expose her to society as an adulteress, but instead, he decides to dismiss her quietly. According to Brown, “kindness or mercy was a key factor to Joseph’s unrighteous or justice” (126) because he chose to pass judgment of Mary for being unfaithful to him instead of publically shaming her. Joseph knew that if he were to expose Mary for committing adultery, she would be stoned to death, so he was protecting her and the unborn child. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him “to take Mary as his wife, for the child is conceived in her from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and

In Genesis 50:15-21, Joseph’s narrative reaches its climactic point with the clear picture of the fulfillment of the dream as traced back in Genesis 37. The dream motif in Joseph’s narrative is key as it provides a vehicle through which God’s purpose is revealed . It shows how God’s hand was behind the scenes pulling the strings causing the events in Joseph’s life with the intention that through him, His blessings upon the survival of Israel and many others is realized. This is brought out clearly in 50:20,“you meant it for evil (but) God meant it for good”. A clear demonstration that when evil confronts the purposes of God, it succumbs.…

Jesus was born to Joseph and Mary because God needed to have us to be reminded of who and what we are here for and what God can do for us. So Jesus became a part of us and walked among us and taught us all about God’s word and what God would do for us and that if we only believed in Jesus then we would once again walk with God and have eternal life. Jesus’s identity is important to the Christian worldview because it let’s us know that we have a purpose and reminds us to believe in God and do good and believe in him. As long as we have repent our sins and believe in God and try and remind each other what Jesus did for us and to teach what Jesus taught the disciples to each other.…

The film ‘The Birth of Jesus’ was a film that is based around the birth of Jesus. It was taken directly out of the Bible but was altered a bit to suite audiences and have a higher profit. The movie provides a reasonably accurate representation of the birth of Jesus. There are a few scenes that are not accurate though. For example there was a scene where Joseph is walking Mary and the donkey across the river then a snack attacks the donkey causing it to fall with Mary.…

“The announcement of the birth of this newborn king of the Jews greatly troubles not only King Herod but all Jerusalem” (Matthew 2:1-3), yet the Gentile Maji are overjoyed to find him and offer him their homage and gifts (Matthew 2:10-11). This explains how the ultimate rejection Jesus faces from his own people but gains acceptance from the Gentile nations. Jesus must escape the murderous plans of Herod and escape to Egypt where he will relive the Exodus experience in Israel. The angel of the lord appeared in Josephs dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt and stay there until I tell you (Matthew 2:13). A similar father/son relationship existed in the Bible between Joseph and Jacob who were separated for many years. Nearing the end of his life, Jacob asked his son Joseph: “If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, they hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt,” (Genesis 47:29), which Joseph sore to him to bury him with his fathers out of Egypt. Scholars have widely agreed that the Gospel of Luke has a special focus on the concern for the poor. This concern for the poor and marginalized first becomes obvious in the account of Jesus’ birth. In the Gospel of Matthew (2:1-12), it is the Magi, wealthy men from a distant country that come to worship Jesus, while Luke tells readers about shepherds- lowly men working in the fields coming to see the baby Jesus. Also, Luke has women, Elizabeth and Mary who as the focal point of the infancy narrative, while Matthew uses two men, Joseph and Herod the Great. The Gospel shows God being immensely concerned for those who were considered poor, and as a result was marginalized.…
