Inequality: Article Analysis

In this article the author talks about inequality and its two types. Then, he goes on explaining the differences between dominants and subordinates. Inequality as it is presented in this article is based for the most part of status and power. For example, he talks about differences between the adult and the child, men and women and of course racial differences white and black etc. focusing only on these we can all agree that conflicts among these groups have always existed and still today we carry many of the traditional views on such differences. When talking about inequality we can focus on two levels, it can be either temporary or permanent inequality. Temporary inequality refers to the idea that the “superior” party has a greater value …show more content…
The dominant groups tend to suppress the subordinates. The subordinates are expected to perform the job and duties that the dominants refuse to perform. That is, the work that the dominant desires to perform is exclusively available for the dominant and kept form the accessibility of the subordinates. The dominant group expects the subordinate group to be submissive, passive, lacking initiative and unable to think and act, if this is correct then the subordinate group is considered well adjusted. Basically, the dominant group determines what is normal for a specific culture. It is important to mention that the dominant group tends to avoid conflict or any satiation in which there might be questioning of their actions and activities. In other words, any actions that can potentially affect what the dominant group have created in a culture as being the norm its basically suppress. Subordinates are so dedicated to the dominants that they often lose their opportunity to acquire knowledge about their own lives. Such as, self-understanding, basically learning from their actions and hoe they might react in certain situations. It comes to the point that they know so much about the dominants that they know nothing at all about themselves and their lives. Subordinates lose their sense of expression and action as they become more like servants of the dominant …show more content…
It was very interesting and I gained more knowledge on the subject of inequality. This article also opened my eyes to new perspectives and opinions on the subject. We have been dealing with inequality issues for quite some time now and it seems like a never-ending process. From where we were years ago of course we have made a lot of progress but again, it has not completely change. There are still people that hold fundamental views on this subject, people that believe that whites are better than blacks and that men are better than women. Regardless of our improvements as a society we still live in a world of inequalities and discrimination towards the “minorities”. I really like how in this article they explained how the dominant group in real life blacks or men are the ones who decide what is normal, what are the rules and even the way the subordinates (blacks & women) should act. But what is even more interesting is that we really fall for it; we believe that it is okay to live a life decided by others and driven by what is best for others before than even thinking or considering what is best for us. It is important to mention that subordinates adopt this believe mainly when they see no other alternative but to accept the reality they live

Getting Real About Race I chose to do my paper on Dawne Mouzon’s “Black People Don’t Value Marriage as Much as Other Groups” essay. This essay not only opened my eyes, but changed even more of the views I had on marriage and race. Mouzon not only speaks about Black, White, and Mexican American marriages, but she also does a great amount of research that helps support her article. Many of the surveys involved questions about how important it was for the family to have a good steady income, an exceptional education, and good economic stability.…

“The Struggle for Black Equality” by Harvard Sitkoff, summarizes the key elements in the fight for the civil rights of African Americans from 1954-1980. The book was set up in chronological order, each chapter embodying the new step to gain equality. The first chapter is titled “Up from slavery,” it consists of the small actions that took place slowly to assure the equal rights. By the end of the first chapter, the concept of equal rights was introduced more prominently, opening people's eyes to the problem. Nevertheless, there was still doubt in the system and people who did not agree.…

    1. After reading the text and looking over the lecture I was not surprised to learn about how race and life worked together in conjunction with inequality. I would not consider myself a minority or someone who has faced racial inequality. I grew up in primarily sheltered neighborhood and was not aware really of what went on around me. However, as I aged I grew to see how even things simple things like school or TV fostered racial thoughts.…

Out of all the articles, the one that stood out to me the most was the last one where it discussed the privileges that people have in the article “The Social Construction of Difference.” I found this article interesting because it provided examples of privileges, which is usually seen as a difficult task. Personally I believe it is primarily due to the fact that we don’t like to think we have an advantage over someone else solely based on race, gender, class, and etc.…

This article was extremely interesting and thought-provoking, I feel as if it’s something that most people should read in their lifetime. The very first sentence is something along the lines of racism is mainly taught to people as being see in individual acts of meanness, not hidden systems that give dominance to a certain group of people and I honestly think that’s what society taught to the white people I knew from my younger years. McIntosh also goes on to tie in male privilege and how while some men may admit that they have more privilege than women, they also never are willing to give away some of that privilege. Which is also seen in a variety of situations, such as straight privilege or heterosexism and how we constantly hear about it…

    Dr. Jensen Analysis

Robert Jensen’s presentation about social justice was a surprise to me, beforehand I was expecting to listen to a man that was going to shove white privilege, feminism, racism, etc. down our throats like many other professionals in the field. In reality, he was a very down to earth and educated man who worked a part of his life trying to fix and tell others about the social injustices we see in the present. What struck me the most was that I was expecting to hear a presentation from a young woman, and not from a middle-aged white man because these topics are normally spoken by women and not men. Initial thoughts aside, I think what stayed with me the most about Dr. Jensen’s talk was how we have seen this divide between man for less than 15,000 years.…

The article “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” was written to inform the reader about white privilege and male privilege. It states that men necessarily do not realize that they hold an advantage over women just as though whites do not always realize they are more privileged than blacks. The author Peggy McIntosh thoroughly describes that just by being born with white skin, you automatically are at an advantage over someone who was not born white. She also explains that men do in fact recognize women’s status in the world and will do certain things to improve it. However, they are unwilling to do anything to lessen their own privilege.…

“Friedrich Nietzsche on Master and Slave Morality,” an explication by Dr. John Armstrong, explains Friedrich Nietzsche's view on morality that argues Slave Morality is created to restrict “superior” people. To achieve such a claim, Armstrong compares and explains Master Morality and Slave Morality, and he further reveals the flaws of Slave Morality, “[the] artificial boundaries that constrain the strong from reaching their full potential” (5). Opening his analysis, Armstrong chronicles the history of Master and Slave Morality and informs the readers about Friedrich Nietzsche and his motivation for exploring the difference between these moralities. Armstrong reveals that Nietzsche, a philologist, values Master Morality over Slave Morality since it leads to the “peak of Western civilization” (1). Yet, many religions value Slave Morality instead.…

Thus, the individual differences between participants inspires further investigation. As mentioned in lecture, only 14% of the subjects consistently conformed to the group, while 24% never conformed (19/04/16). It seems plausible that the decision to conform involves personality differences, particularly in the traits of power and dominance. To investigate the role of power in this conformity task, I propose that replications of this study include a questionnaire in the beginning, to gauge the general personality type of participants beforehand. Additionally, since there is not much empirical support for the role of personality differences in conformity, subjects should be primed to elicit particular personality traits would evoke a more salient response.…

Inequality has been a hot topic for America since it was founded back in 1776. The American people have always attempted to place themselves on a pedestal above one another. It did not matter who was discriminated at the time, only if it allowed that individual to have the upper hand. While a lot of these rules, regulations, and ignorant commonsensical thoughts have been dispersed, more have been shrouded from the public eye. The most deviant situation that is transpiring in society today is within the work force.…
