One of my favorite shows in the whole world is Game of Thrones. Set in a time period when social class was the first label you got, social stratification was all in this show. In Game of Thrones, before you even know the character’s name, you know what class they are in. Weather its based off the city they are in, their clothes, job, or even the food they are eating, you know if they are rich or poor. In the show, there are head families in Westeros called the Starks, Aaryn’s, Baratheon’s, Tully’s, Greyjoy’s, Lannister’s, Tyrell’s, Martell’s, and the Targaryen’s. In the U.S social class plays a big part in your success through life, just like in Game if Thrones. Here in the U.S, it can be very difficult to move up in class because one can very easily not be exposed to financial, social, or structural capital. Children born in poor areas like Detroit, Brooklyn, and Chicago will not be given the same opportunities then kids born in higher class areas. We can see this in Game of Thrones too because whatever class you are born in, there is a high percent change that you will be stuck there and unable to move. I think that the Structural Functionalist is the best version of stratification because the idea that society must place people in social positions is very important because without that, there would be no balance in society. Also, the idea that society places appropriate people in said positions is very representative of how we live today.
What I took from this blog assignment is that there are mirror images of our own lives all around us. I never thought that a television show set in A.D would reflect who we are as society today. Even though some people say television shows are fake, they can be a real inside look of how we are. As I watch more shows, read books, and listen to music, I will be on the lookout for parallel thoughts to
