If you can guess, where a person comes, by the way he speaks English then his English communication suffers from native tongue influence. This brings down the confidence of the speaker as he knows that he sounds wrong and funny. Sometimes teachers mix with their native-tongue or they probably get confused with US English, British English. To overcome the influence of native tongue and correcting mistakes listening and reading are the two tasks to be carried out. English tongue twisters will be of great help. Students learn pronunciation only with the help of the teachers, so while speaking and teaching English they have to be conscious about the pronunciation. Basic practice should be given to the students in phonetics. Many students from non-native English speakers feel shy or hesitate to speak English as they think that they do not have a fluency in speaking or commit a mistake. Encourage and motivate the student to speak simple phrases like ‘please come here,’ ‘How are you?’, ‘what is your name?’ etc., these phrases we use daily and easy for them to speak and learn English. (English at home website). The teacher should know the student’s previous knowledge in English, by assessing him in dictation, speech, reading etc. By assessing prior knowledge it helps the teacher to know the students ability and whether they are able to understand listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
