Overview
Music venues play a very important role in society. Before musicians could physically record their work, the only way for people to experience music was to see it live, at some type of venue. Whether it be a bandstand or arena, music has been bringing people, musicians and their art together for a long time. That’s a venue’s fundamental purpose.
Through technological advances, the music scene has grown and developed rapidly since the mid-20th century. Furthermore the digital revolution has completely changed the way we access, view and consume music. As a result of this, many industry services have been forced to adapt. These may include:
• Genre: only a specific genre(s) may be permitted to perform or be played. E.g. Jazz clubs typically only feature Jazz music.
• Capacity: max number of people that are permitted to be in the establishment at any one particular time.
• Temporary/non-permanent set ups: where a ‘portable’ venue is set up e.g. festivals
• Outside/inside
• Ownership: private, public or government owned.
• Live performances or recordings: some venues may only play recorded music through their own sound system as opposed to having live acts. (BOO)
Structure
Nothing happens at a venue without there being people there to complete daily tasks and organize operations and business. As there are a number of different venue types (specified above), structure and organization of staff will vary widely. Consequently, a café with a maximum capacity of 30 customers will have considerably less staff and departments as opposed to a club with a maximum capacity of 1000 …show more content…
The sole reason why some musicians give up on their dreams or don’t do live shows at all is because they’re over-come by anxiousness or have other psychological barriers stopping them. This is one reason why having performing experience is so important to a rising artist. It’s natural to be nervous and nerves can be settled or overcome after a completing a variety of live performances which include different stage settings, venue types or crowd numbers.
Testing out new songs/material and learning to ‘read’ and interact with the audience are also benefits from being an experienced performer.
An aspiring musician needs both a reasonable and regular amount of time to work on their craft. Living in the modern world is expensive and aspiring musicians will need some sort of income to keep them above the poverty line. Getting paid to perform is perfect as this can save many hours spent working in an unrelated industry and grants you experience at the same
