2.1 The Key unions in the Retail Industry
a) Brief history since 1970
Saccawu is the largest union in the retail industry on the basis of the number of workers it represents. Saccawu (South African Catering and Commercial Workers Union) was founded in July 1975 at the beginning stages of the famous Durban Strikes. The year 2003 witnessed massive retrenchments in the retail industry and caused strikes for demands for the implementation of a new Sectorial Determination, which was a first for Saccawu. (Forrest, 2005)
b) Goals, Strategies and Priorities in Recent Years Saccawu’s goals are to protect and fight for a decent standard of living, to form the ideal workplace for workers which are democratic, non-racial and a non-sexist society free of abuse and to struggle for the dismissal of capitalist systems and maintaining a classless society. (Forrest, 2005) The strategies in place are forming a strong and democratic organisation, which carried out democratic decision-making. Merging all workers and Trade Unions into one strong national union and depleting all forms of racism and Sexism. (Forrest, 2005) Saccawu prioritises regulating relations between employees and employers to protect interests. To build strong and active shop stewards and improving wage and working conditions. Resist retrenchment and fight for full-time employment. To set up effective collective bargaining mechanisms which work towards one federation of the trade union and aims at uniting to represent all workers of South Africa. (Forrest, 2005)
