The clash between traditional culture and modern progress in the United States was demonstrated in 1861 at the beginning over the Civil War. The war was a conflict between agrarian society which used slaves to get work done for farming and an industrial society which paid all employees and fueled a consumer economy. Due to the up roar in new factories during the industrial revolution, America's economy began to grow immensely through the new jobs that were created and all of the new cash being put into the consumer based economy that had formed. By creating new factories and new companies to build those factories, millions of new jobs were created, causing for the the creation of labor unions and laws such as the National Labor Union which was created in 1866. These paid employees began to face adversity such as low wages and gruesome treatment in the workplace. Because of this, unions were formed such as the the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions which was formed in 1881 to protect factory workers from the dangers of working in an 1800’s factory and give the workers rights in case of
