Industrial Revolution Mixed Blessings

The Industrial Revolution has been described as a mixed blessing. I agree with this statement for many reasons. When it says “mixed blessings” it's saying that it had both good and bad effects on people and ways of living. Some good effects/blessings it had were how it increased the production of goods, raise the standards of living, provided hope of improvement in peoples lives, included healthier diets, better housing, mass produced clothing, and expanded educational opportunities. Some of the economic successes of the Industrial Revolution are proved in one of Britain’s industrial cities, Manchester, in the 1800s. Manchester had many unique advantages that made it a leading example of the new industrial city. Manchester was a great place to show the negative and positive aspect of industrialization. It had rapid unplanned growth which made it an unhealthy place for poor people. But, wealth flowed from its factories. It went first to the mill owners and the new middle class. The workers in Manchester took pride in their work, they worked for many hours which made them get rewarded with high profits. A famous French writer named Alexis de Tocqueville, visited Manchester and wrote, “From this filthy sewer pure gold flows.” Meaning even though it might seem like a trashy …show more content…
