From my earliest years, reading was an essential part of my life. My mother and my older brother loved to read. My teacher was Mrs. Frost; she was short with bright red hair. She had shelves full of books. She had all different genres for us to discover. Mrs. Frost would read a book every day. She had a rocking chair and would ask everyone to gather around her for story time. Mrs. Frost would always make story time more enjoyable by wearing hats or costumes associated with the books. I loved that she kept a smile on everyone’s face, and every student was engaged in the book. I remember that my class was divided into reading groups according to skill level. Each group had their own workbook that was distinguished by a color band at the top of the workbook. It was no secret that the best readers in my class used blue workbooks. I unfortunately did not use a blue workbook. I struggled a lot in reading, so much so that I felt I wanted to give up on learning to read. Some other classmates would make fun of me for not being on the same reading level as they. Mrs. Frost never gave up on me and continued to work with me every day. Several days I had to stay after school for tutoring. I had to work hard but before I knew it I was reading out loud quicker and with better inflection and articulation than some of my other classmates. Iwas so glad that she never gave up on me and inspired me to keep reading. She taught me that reading can also be an escape and can relieve stress. As I continue my literate journey, I read a lot more challenging books and different genres. I am really interested in romance and mystery novels. One of my favorite book series in school was Cam Jansen Mystery books. The everyday adventures that I could relate with were the reason I was captivated by the books. In third grade, I read an inspiring book called A Little Princess by Frances Burnett. I would read this book so over and over, and every time I read the book I would cry because the story was so emotional. The little girl in the story never gave up or stop believing although she lost everything. Every time I read this book I also remember my year in first grade, and my realization that I should never give up on anything. I should also keep believing that things will look up. Through books, I learned so much about the world, about life, and about how to escape the real world 's difficulties. And for that, I am
