The study wanted to determine how Indonesian and American adolescent’s perception of family life impacted their drug usage. Three main ideas were presented. The first idea deals with adolescent perception of their family’s cohesion and adaptability levels. The second idea deals with the differences between each sample taken. The third idea, was to conclude on the importance of family adaptability and cohesion in relation the severity of the adolescent’s drug use

Indonesian adolescents view their family as balanced, engaged, and rigid. Parents placed the blame on themselves for their child’s drug seeking behaviors.
Family adaptability does not predict adolescent drug abuse, while family cohesion does. Adolescents that lack close family relationships are at the highest risk for drug abuse.

Recommendations
Adolescent drug abuse is an equal problem in both the United States and Indonesia.
In order to develop a culturally relevant understanding of adolescent drug abusing behaviors, further research must take into account “salience of culture and family environment”.

Reflection
Adolescent drug abuse has been an issue in my home for the last year. Advise for “dealing” with the situation are highly available, while solutions do not seem nonexistent. This study showed how some Indonesian families successfully deal with drug abuse. Their families are open and understanding about the issues, leading to less demonization of the child.
I think that if I am to be successful, evaluating the successful strategies used by other cultures might yield results that can ultimately lead to real
