Individuals Are Not Categories Diversity has been a topic discussed in much detail throughout the semester. Diversity includes culture, gender, ethnicity, and many more aspects included as part of one’s identity. It should be accepted and celebrated rather than looked at as a dividing factor. The world and every part of it is unique and has unique inhabitants. The differences should be embraced because they will be present for the entirety of every individual’s life and interactions are very important. Teaching students at a young age to be accepting of diversity is key to allowing them to make connections with all individuals, leading to great success. One of her quotes, “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength” (Angelou, n.d.), shows the benefits of acknowledging and learning about diversity early in life. Many lessons can be adapted to fit with this quote, I would have students work together and generate a list of all the characteristics they find beautiful or strong. When comparing these lists, the students should notice each item on the list belongs to a different category and is diverse. Every person in the room will likely have one of these traits and they can view every individual as having equal worth. There is beauty and strength in everyone, not simply one group of people; diversity allows for a broader spectrum of magnificence. An explanation on how race and gender are culturally constructed and more of a spectrum would also be provided (SOURCE). Challenging the students to find something they love about each person in the room proves diversity should be accepted because without it, the world lacks many traits that make it
