Conformity vs Individuality: Losing Our Selves! “Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” We have all heard this untruth before; unfortunately, it is our own traumatic experiences that have taught us just how much damage words can actually do. It seems that anyone who is different, anyone who stands out from the crowd has a bright red sign painted on their back that says, “kick me.” Why does it seem like conformity holds so much more value in our society over individuality? The standard definition of conformity is “compliance with social norms.” Interestingly, a synonym for compliance is obedience. Dogs are obedient, at least good dogs are. I am not sure that obedience is what we should value most in our society. …show more content…
However, not many of us can live up to that expectation. In fact, most of us give over our individuality, our uniqueness, to be part of a group in order to fit in—not Leopard Man though! Leopard Man is described by Logan Feys in his article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man” as “no ordinary freak.” Leopard Man is covered from head to toe in leopard spots, and he lives alone in the wilderness; nevertheless, he is happy. Feys argues that Leopard Man’s lifestyle has freed him from the social pressures of society (par. 7). I agree with Feys that all of us from time to time should try out non conformity, because as a member of our society, I have seen how nonconformists have helped change and shape our society for the …show more content…
6). Some people, however, are more optimistic about our ability to be ourselves in the face of such overwhelming odds. The young author of the article, “Individuality vs. Conformity: A Healthy Middle?” asserts that although it is difficult, we should at least try to find that “delicate balance between complete individuality and complete uniformity” (par. 7). Although I agree with this article up until a point, I think the young author overlooks the difficult journey a person must make to stand out at all in our society today. Feys would agree with me. In “The Sociology of Leopard Man,” he reminds us that, “One can enjoy the benefits modern society offers without becoming dependant on society, but it takes a strong will” (par. 9). How many of us have that “strong will” Feys describes? Apparently not many of us, and science has proven

In 1859, Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution by natural selection, it states that organisms best adapted to their environment will thrive and reproduce more efficiently. In the 1870’s, an idea known as “Social Darwinism” inspired by Darwin’s theory came to public attention; this was the idea that certain characteristics could determine a person's social success. In today’s society, people strive for social acceptance and contort themselves in order to conform to what is socially respectable, or go out of their way in order try to convince people to accept others. But at what point does this social contortionism become unhealthy and obsessive? The short story “G-String”, by Nicola Barker, revolves around the life of Gillian, a middle aged woman, and her romantic…

To Conform or Not to Conform? Conformity is a life that only leads to unhappiness and a voice that will not be heard. The sheep from Animal Farm chooses to conform through their slogans, while Christopher choose to continue writing a book he was told to discontinue. The sheep unknowingly followed everything the pigs told them to do while Christopher knowingly disobeyed his father. Conformity gives the person a choice to use their voice or be silenced, though both will cause a negative outcome.…

Humans are widely diverse: with a population over seven billion, each containing unique personalities, experiences, beliefs, morals, just how much of a person’s individual humanity can he or she consider their own creation? In the field of psychology, there is a debate called Nature vs. Nurture which considers the effects of environmental and hereditary traits on the development of personality. Despite being perhaps the largest topic in psychology, there has yet to be an accurate answer as to how much either Nature or Nurture plays in one’s life, but, there is an underlying debate which is even more existentially troubling: how much of an individual’s lifestyle is in their control. In The other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, Moore explores the lifestyles…

Humans are social beings and conforming to society is one way that we show each other that we are like them. Sometimes we feel obligated to conform by the people we respect, look up to, or people who are in higher positions than us. Leopard Man In his article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man,” Logan Feys believes that people that do not conform to society are freaks. Feys supports his belief through the use of pathos. Feys purpose is to satirize people who do not conform, in order to convince the audience that non-conformist are “freaks,” Fey uses pessimism with his intended audience. While I generally agree with Logan Fey’s statement about individuality, I found some of his positions to be quite extreme.…

When reading Feys article, we are given his main argument of conformity being the world's most common and dangerous mental disorder, which I don't completely agree with. Reading about conformity and hearing about the effects it has on teens, it seems to be such a sad and depressing topic. We have identified conformity as the action of wanting to fit so you conform, or adapt, to situations, actions, or behavior followed by society. And when looking into a teenage society, what do you see? With me being a teenager, I see people trying to fit in and become accustomed to the society shown to them.…

We, as humans, like to believe that we always stand out in a crowd and never conform to please society. This freedom to be an individual is held to a higher degree than most of our other freedoms. Humans believe that we always use this freedom to speak our opinions and rarely admit to changing our views to comply with a group. As much as we deny that we don’t, it seems that more often than not, we follow the crowd. In her article “Group Minds”, Doris Lessing was on the right track when she described how humans stand for choice and individualism, but when faced with the situation, most tend to fall in line with the majority.…
