Many children today are starting to dread going to school, they consider it a “prison”. Hence why there is tension in schools all over the country between individuality and conformity. A big issue we have in our schools that aids to this tension would be the given structure of the school day, whether it is a set schedule or mandatory attendance. Schools should resort to more student individuality vs. conformity. To start, many students and adults compare our schooling system to a prison. “...forced schooling = six classes a day, five days a week… is this deadly routine really necessary?” (Gatto), students must attend six class periods a day. Allowing students four minutes to get to their next class, to only sit for about fifty more minutes makes the school feel like a prison. This sense of conformity is what the students can’t stand causing tension. If there was a stronger individual presence where students could choose their schedule, they wouldn’t want to skip class and be late, they’d be more likely to show an interest in attending school. Which leads to more tension, the attendance required for this set schedule. Before when parents would keep children home to work, we needed stricter attendance policies to get them to school, “They protected children’s rights to some schooling…”(Holt) Today, we should expand and modify the attendance policy because that is no longer the case. With these strict, only nine unexcused or excused absences a year allowed, is keeping the children that don’t want to learn, that disrupt teaching and learning in our classrooms. If I had more absences allowed, maybe I could take an extra day to finish work because I receive too much, or even just take a day to nap because school drains you out. Many other students could probably agree with me on that. Providing less conformity, would make school a little more peaceful, and ease the students’ minds that are so set and nervous if they miss a class or are late one
