Individuality: The Role Of Conformity In Our Culture

In a society, where having the same beliefs or values as someone else can determine whether you are accepted or denied, many people choose to conform with it. The worst struggle that a human being has to face in his or her life is fitting into a group. The fear that someone will be rejected or not be loved is very prominent in a human’s mind and is a very influential thought. When people fail to conform to the majority they can expect the world to be against them and that will scare anyone from doing that. Those who deny the beliefs and values of society become smarter and promote change for the better. Not conforming to the standards set by our culture is the opposite of conforming. The word conformity means compliance to standards, rules, or laws. If everyone conformed and never challenged the rules in our lives, there would be no room for variety. The Constitution of the United States tells us that we have individual freedoms. Freedom of religion is the very first one, which shows that we have the right to believe anything we want and encourages us to resist societal influences. With this freedom, we are able to have what makes America such a great country and it allows people to make their own decisions. There are many small groups of people that altogether resist the majority and these people are the real heroes. They make America great by providing difference and a never ending supply of creativity in our country and the world, something that conformity does
