It can be difficult to discover our interesting qualities and personalities, especially when those characteristics are disregarded by the people around us. When we are held down and forced to obey rules and regulations, it does not allow the freedom for the mind to wander and learn. However, when individuality is celebrated and encouraged, it can open doors to creativity and innovation. The lift of limitations creates the ability to express ourselves, discover new things, and benefit others. Bernard Marx and other characters in Brave New World portray their feelings towards the regulation regarding individuality in their society, their intelligent minds and interesting opinions cannot be used to serve their society if not regarded by the people around them, as everybody in their society already has a predetermined role. Thinking back to the jigsaw puzzle of society, if all of the pieces were the same shape and size, the puzzles would not fit together neatly to form the entire puzzle. Similarly, if everyone in society had the same traits and behaviours, there would not be any depth or dimension in character, and it would not allow creative thinking that would lead to positive changes to taking place. This can act as a constraint and will hinder the imagination and creativity that can occur in the mind. When I am given an assignment in which I am told to follow the strict guidelines, I often feel bored and unoriginal. I begin to think that my best work will not be portrayed because of the approach I am being directed to take. If all of the students in a class took different techniques to completing creative assignments, a wide variety of work would be displayed, and a better understanding of the concepts will be shown. This is similar to Brave New World, as the government does not give its people the freedom to pursue their passions or do what they love because it would lead to imbalance in social stability in society. By making everyone almost identical, everything that occurs will be predicted and understood by the government. If I lived in the World State, I would feel powerless and weak, and I would resent my life and the people who control me.
