The novel, Anthem, published in 1938 by Ayn Rand is set in the future when society is a communal dictatorship. Rand wrote this novel during the great purge in Russia. Anthem tells us our individuality is crucial. Ayn Rand wanted to show us how important that individuality is and what life can become without it.
You may find yourself asking, ‘’what is society exactly about’’? This society basically enslaves the mind. It is illegal for them to do such actions. Acting or even thinking as a solitary is a crime punishable by death. The society believes that nothing positive can come from one man, that one man cannot decipher the same as numerous minds together. Equality tells us how the society doesn’t let you have an age, original name, or any sort of individualism. An example of this is equality’s name ‘’Equality 7-2521’’ and when he refers to his age, he uses ‘’we’’ instead of ‘’I’’. Your jobs, housing, clothes and everything in between is chosen for you. If you break any of these laws you could be whipped, killed, or anything they feel is good discipline for your actions. In this shared dictatorship, your whole way of life is controlled by the scholars.
Society for them is very different for them compared to our way of life now. In fact, it is the complete opposite. We can have jobs we want and spend our money on what we want, name our children anything; and enjoy yourself as an individual. This society has zero of that.
