A culture with strong uncertainty avoidance does not like change. A culture with weak uncertainty avoidance encourages change and to take risks. Greece has a high level of uncertainty avoidance while Singapore has a low level.
- Masculinity-Femininity o This dimension is quite self-explanatory; it basically describes the power distribution between male and female. Countries with a high masculine level tends to be more assertive, dominant, and competitive about everything. They are very ego-oriented which means everything is about them and also think that winning means everything them. Countries with a high femininity level are feelings-oriented. This basically means that they care about others rather than just being self-centered. They think of others and enjoy life. A country like Japan is high on masculinity level and Sweden has a high femininity level.
- Indulgence VS Restraint o A restraint culture has a perception that they are helpless to whatever happens in their life. They cannot prevent or do anything about it because it is way out of their control. Indulgent cultures tend to have a carefree attitude and think that they have full control of their lives. In America, they are very blunt and direct when making deals. They know what they want and when they want it, which makes the Chinese businessmen very uneasy and nervous. The American businessmen often view a person who is not straightforward and blunt as insincere about the deal. That itself creates a clash between the two different cultures. Doing business in China often takes longer compared to the United States. The reason for that is China wants to build a strong relationship first before finishing a deal. In China, it is normal to have a meeting multiple times before a deal could be finalized. But on the other hand, US wants to get in and out and finish the deal as soon as possible to maximize potential profit for them. An aggressive approach is not very pleasing to the Chinese culture since they tend to overthink it and really like getting to know who they’re making business
