The movie I chose for option one was “The Truman Show”(1998) starring Jim Carrey and Paul Giamatti. This Movie is also a science fiction comedy drama. The issue around this time is that there were slim to none philosophical movies in 1998. This analysis will include a basic summary of the movie. The movie also has a theme of utopia that will be discussed as well. To conclude I will describe how the future is told through the movie too and whether I agree or disagree with how the director/author tells and foreshadows it.
Some issues before the movie was that there were barely any philosophical sci-fi movies in the. When the movie came out there was a lot of philosophy with it that made at least me think about life and how we live. The movie kinda hinted at some of these issues such as “free will, reality, and individualism.” Truman was not at liberty to choose whether or not he wanted to be on the show and was live a lie for his whole life. Sylvia a person who tried to help Truman escape (she was an actor on the show)leads a protest to free him from the lie that is his life. …show more content…
Truman has his reality and reality check when he realizes the clockwork in his town and his “wife” breaks character. The real world has this reality check to when Truman does because they start to think about if they were in Truman's place at that very moment. Christof really pushed the themes of utopia and individualism to the limit. He only ever really cared about just the show and the ratings but not about Truman or the other actors.
