Individualism In American Culture Essay

Values are a person's principles or standards of behavior. They are also one's judgment of what is important in life. Values differ from person to person and from culture to culture. While some cultures do have similar values they all still have their differences. When traveling to other countries or places with a different culture you will notice the differences in values and the way things are done. Some cultures strive to be kind, friendly, and care about others, while other cultures are the opposite and only care about themselves and how they operate. When young, we are told to be ourselves and that we are responsible for our own situations and we control our fate in life. We are not generally trained to be part of a “close-knit” family or group. While some families do value that most in America don’t. I do believe that this to be true. Americans also tend to get offended when someone or something suggests that they are “just like everyone else” due to social factors outside of themselves. A good example of individualism in advertisement is any clothing ad. They all talk about being yourself in the clothes you wear, tell you how you are different from everyone else in their clothing, and to make it you. Americans also like their privacy. Americans tend to enjoy their privacy a lot more than other cultures and we tend to have a hard time understanding those cultures that value always wanting to be with another person and don’t like being alone. Americans assume that people need some time alone and too themselves to cope with a situation, or to just help clear their head. I know that personally I enjoy my privacy.
