There is more likelihood of materialistic consumers participating in unethical actions while disregarding other elements such as religion, family or self-held beliefs. For obtaining more tangible or intangible assets, materialistic consumers have high probability of breaking their own beliefs. Managers feeling obliged to thrive, whether for the purpose of increased earnings or a higher position, are likely to take part in unethical activities. In some studies materialism is negatively associated with ethical practices, while in other works there is no significant link for instance between materialism and the number of credit cards belonging to each individual. The decisions made by consumers at times of questionable situations are based on personal desire and the significance of choice to one’s self and to others.

Any individual is a part of a larger community, so how a person chooses to behave is of great significance to the relation of that person with other individuals. In other words, a person’s behavior will influence the lives of other people usually within the same community. So this relation is reflected in value orientations in the forms of individualism and collectivism. Thus value orientation reflects an individual’s position in terms of acting ethically in regards to self and others. interests of his own small family. When in situations that need ethical questioning, individualistic people are not greatly affected by the common beliefs and by what society defines as acceptable or not. They basically pursue what best satisfies their own desire.
