For example, on line 2 of “anyone lived in a pretty how town” it states, “(with up so floating many bells down)” which creates imagery of the rolling hills of the landscape that represent the ups and downs of life and that it is not easy to be an individual, but Cummings conveys that it is also very valuable. Comparatively, on line 19 stating, “(sleep wake hope and then)” is also imagery; it creates a picture of people just walking through life and just getting by but not truly living. In The Great Gatsby imagery is also used to support the theme. A vivid picture is created when “Dressed up in white flannels I went over to his lawn…” is stated (41;Ch. 3). The white flannels represent how Nick is a simple and clean cut guy because white is a color representing innocence. It also shows how he is an individual and different from most people in the 1920’s; being that he is innocent. Gatsby’s party goers can be described as conformists because of their words and actions. Specifically, in chapter 4 on page 61 a party goer states,“Reach me a rose, honey, and pour me a last drop in that there crystal glass” creating imagery through the rose, a red flower, that generates a sinister manner for the party goer. It also shows that the people who conformed were letting their lives pass them by. Additionally, on line 8 it states, “spring summer autumn winter”; this motif depicts the people who are wasting their lives away and just surviving. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a non-existent nose”. The eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg symbolize the eyes of God watching over the wicked conformists and how they can not escape the unpleasant truth of their daily lives. Another recurring motif in The Great Gatsby is the color white, as shown on page 115 of chapter 7, “Daisy and Jordan lay upon an enormous couch, like silver idols weighing down their own white dresses against the singing breeze of the fans.” The color white represents Jordan Baker and Daisy Buchanan trying to appear innocent and pure, foreshadowing the idea that they are truly attempting to get away with things.
