Non Participant Observation Essay

Individual & Society: Non-Participant Observation Assignment The use of technology in our society is growing exponentially compared to the past few decades. The fact that cell-phone usage is part of a daily routine for many is undeniable. Furthermore, I have decided to conduct a non-participant observation in order to answer a few questions. To begin with, are many people using cell phones? Furthermore, are people who are on their cell phones alone, or are they with others? Lastly, what are the face-to-face interactions of the people are alone and on their phones: do they look around? My experiment took place in the cafeteria of my work place. It started at 12:30PM and lasted a good thirty minutes. During this period of time, I observed 25 people. I sat in a corner and acted as if I was a part of the normal crowed in order to keep this experiment as fair as possible. This project allowed me to better understand today’s society. People are more informed with what’s going on in society because social media has the power to distribute information to millions in a matter of seconds. People seem emotionless and glued to their cell phones without realising it. In my opinion, this is a reason why people do terrible things, like texting while driving. The fact that we can stay in touch through text messages and video chats makes avoid a few family meeting or social interactions. In the past, we had to go see them. This experiment confirmed to me that, indeed, many people use their cell phones. Most of them use them to surf and they made little to no eye contact with others. I admire all the great impacts these devices are have in our lives, but I hope that we learn to put them down every once in a while to speak with others around use.
