Indirect Vs. Direct Characterization
Indirect characterization is when the writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that character's thoughts, words, and actions, along with how other characters respond to that character, including what they think and say about him. Indirect characterization works its way around a character so you can figure out how the character is on your own. Direct characterization is when the writer makes direct statements about a character's personality and tells what the character is like. Direct characterization gets straight to the point and tells you exactly what they look like and how the person is.
Chris is a whole different person when he plays sports, he gets so competitive and he gets angry so quick. If you mess up a play he screams at you for making one mistake, because he thinks that one play can cost us the game. “These guys suck, I’m the only, skill on this team. I’m going to have to do all the work here. We might not even win” he thought to himself. He ran a route and was covered but he called for the ball, so the quarterback threw it to someone else who was open. He dropped the pass, and Chris yelled at the quarterback, “WHY DIDN’T YOU THROW THE BALL AT ME, I CALLED FOR IT!?!” He responds, “I didn’t throw it at you because you were covered, and the guy I threw it at was wide open. It wasn’t my fault he dropped it.” “NEXT TIME I CALL FOR THE BALL, PASS IT TO ME! GOT IT!” “Yea, whatever.” The next play Chris calls for it and the quarterback passes it to him, he catches it runs a few yards, they make him fumble and they recovered it. Then everybody started getting on him, “WHY YOU FUMBLE? SEE YOUR NOT EVEN THAT GOOD, TO BE SCREAMING AT US FOR MAKING MISTAKES!” “WITHOUT ME YOU GUYS ARE NOTHING!” he
