Direct discrimination occurs when a person is treated less favourably than another, in similar circumstances, based on one of the nine grounds. It will include areas where travellers have said to be discriminated in such as houses, jobs, education and social engagements between travellers and none travellers.
A Traveller seems to get a lot of verbal abuse when they are in the same social gathering as non-travellers. This can lead to a fights and disputes. In my project I will be interviewing traveller to ask them questions on how they are being treated in Irish society and how it’s has been affecting them.
According to Lorraine McMahon (2015) Irish Travellers are a small minority of the Irish population, numbering 29,573 according to the census of (2011), but more according to other estimates, or less than 1% of the total. But they are an indigenous minority who have been part of Irish society for centuries and they are a distinct group with long common history and shared culture, values and customs, in which the tradition of leading a nomadic life plays an important part, and which distinguishes them from the sedentary or settled community.
