To begin with, European explorers caused the genocide of Native Americans. “they pitilessly slaughtered everyone like sheep in a corral. It was a general rule moaning Spaniards to be cruel; not just cruel, but extraordinarily cruel so that harsh and bitter treatment would prevent Indians from daring to even think of themselves…
Genocide is a deliberate killing of a large group…
Genocide is defined as “the deliberate killing of people who belong to a particular racial, political, or cultural group” (Merriam-Webster). In 1944, the word “genocide” was invented by Raphael Lemkin, a Polish-Jewish lawyer. This word was used to describe the German soldiers and their demolition against the Jews (What is Genocide?) The word, itself,…
Noted in supreme court cases, Relf v. Weinberger and Buck v. Bell, re-examining compulsory sterilization is pivotal in dismantling discrimination against women. Particularly affecting women of color, the multi-form occurrence is slowly moving into public consciousness along with the effects of settler colonialism. Depopulating foreign land through strategic movements, settler colonialists have been and continue to be clever as far as their tactics to establish political systems. Purposed to disadvantage the colonized and to benefit the colonizers, these systems have been founded upon the misery of Aboriginal peoples. Correspondingly, colonialism intricacies combined with eugenic principles continue to be used to legitimize colonial say in Indigenous women’s sexual and reproductive matters,…
In 1976 a study by the Association on American Indian Affair stated that twenty-five to thirty five percent of the Native American children were being placed in out-of-tribe care. Within those pecents eighty-five percent of those children were being placed in non-native homes. (Unger, Steve 2016) This became a big issue in the late 1900’s because a sense of cultural genocide fell upon the Native American tribes. In 1867 Congress decided that there was an “Indian problem” and the only way to solve this “problem” is to remove the Indian children from their tribes.…
Aboriginal children and youth in Canada can be referred to as one of the most vulnerable populations of children in our society,…
The Indian Child Welfare Act affected Alaska Native children, Native American children, and their families in a positive way. The act has now allowed Indian tribes to attain extensive control over the adoption placement and foster care of Indian children (MacEachron, Gustavsson, Cross, & Lewis, 1996). Indian tribes reacted peacefully because it was a benefit to them. They were glad that their children would no longer be removed from their homes for indefinite reasons. They were also more open to their children being placed within their communities and with people of the same cultural…
Much of the Indigenous people, up to 95% were killed by the european invaders. Genocide of this nature cannot become overshadowed. A new holiday named Native American Day recognizes this genocide so that future generations won’t repeat. Even more so, only two out of the fifty states in the U.S.A celebrate the holiday. The states include California and South Dakota.…
Residential School Reflection What happened in residential schools was not "cultural genocide", it wasn't "language genocide" and it wasn't "almost genocide". What happened in residential schools was genocide. Assimilation and elimination of indians was purely for economic and political gain. Residential schools were never a well-intent "gone wrong". They were death almost half of all the children who entered some of those schools.…
Native American genocide has been going on since 1490, and acts of discrimination and violence are still going against them to this day. Around 12,000 years ago, some nomadic Asians traveled across a land bridge connecting Alaska to Asia. These 50 million people would soon become known as the Native Americans. Christopher Columbus proposed an idea to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. He wanted money and boats to go on a voyage to Asia on the West instead of the East.…
Every country has its own genocide: Hitler has the Jews, Mussolini butchered his people; Russia has its soldiers; Japan slaughtered the Chinese; and the United States, murdered Native Americans. The U.S. government has tortured and brutally slaughtered millions of Native Americans throughout the centuries following the establishment of the United States Government. They have forced many Native Americans from their homelands and have relocated them to dry, desolate areas unwanted by the government, lands viewed as useless and unproductive. We, the Navajo have experienced this.…
The word Genocide means killing or destroying members of an ethic group because of their race, nationality or religion. It is one of the worst crimes that people ever came across when thousands and millions of people were murdered. From 1992-1995 that was happening in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Bosnia is a country in south-eastern Europe that emerged after the break-up of Yugoslavia in 1980. The conflict between the three main ethnic groups in Bosnia, the Serbs, Croats, and Muslims, resulted in genocide committed by the Serbs against the Muslims in this…
“Cultural genocide”, that is exactly what happened when the white man colonized the Indian. To the outsider, Canada appears to be a ‘perfect’ country. From our free healthcare to our need to profusely apologize for bumping into inanimate objects, we are a nation envied by many. Our greatest strength lies in our diversity and multiculturalism. In our current Prime Minister’s words “diversity is at the very heart of Canada.…
One hundred or so years ago, many believed that assimilation of First Nations in Canada was a good policy. No one was aware about the horrid conditions of residential schools at the time. 93,000 residential school students are still alive today. They are the limited survivors of a cultural genocide that many did not even realize had occurred in Canada until very recently. The last residential school did not close until 1996, and to this very day Indigenous society is taut with corruption as a result of centuries of horrors and traumatic experiences .…
Discrimination Against Aboriginal People In Canada: The Fight Isn’t Over The lives of the Aboriginal people in Canada have never been the same since European settlers unjustifiably stole their native land right from under their feet. Life for Aboriginal people will always be affected by the European colonization of Canada, and discrimination against the first nations community still exists to this day.…
