In 1854, there was an incident with the Mormons. One of their cows was killed and eaten by the hungry Brule. These Brule were placed along the North Platte River. The Mormons complained to the commandant at Fort Laramie who immediately responded to investigate. This move only made things worst causing fear and distrust among the whites. This resulted in the government sending men to restore peace.
