Staring with the pre-wedding ceremony is the Haldi, which is where married women apply turmeric to both bride and groom. Following Haldi is the Mehendi ceremony, in where the bride’s hands and feet are decorated with intricate pattern from henna. It is believed that the deeper the color, the stronger the groom’s love is for the bride. After all these rituals, finally comes the three-hour wedding ceremony. The arrival of the groom at the wedding is filled with amusement, music, and dancing. The bride waits under the venue for the groom with a decorated garland. After both bride and groom have reached the venue they are asked to exchange garland. Whoever puts the garland on first is said to have the upper hand in the marriage.
