Over the course of one week, over 70 cars in the city of Weston could be observed in a school zone during the morning. During this week, observation will take place in two different locations in the morning: an area where a police officer is present and a location where there is no police officer present. Additionally, cars that pass other vehicles will be considered speeding and cars whose brake lights come on when approaching the police officer vehicle will be regarded as speeding as well. Finally, in the presence of children and crossing guards can be observed as well.

The data collection took place during the daytime between the hours of 7:30 am to 9 am. An elementary school zone is in effect during the hours of 8 am to 3:30 pm. During this time, cars were observed to analyze the speed of which the driver was driving and if they went over the recommending speeding limit in the school zone. The first location that will be observed is Indian Trace Elementary School, which is located on one of the busiest main streets situated in the heart of Weston, which causes traffic in the area to be severe. On the other hand, the second Country Isles Elementary School, location is quite calmer than Indian Trace Elementary School. Due to not having a high influx of cars, the traffic is quite moderate. To accurately observe the drivers speed, a camera was placed in the middle of the school zone to record the traffic. Along with that, field notes will be taken to write notes on not only the driver’s speed but also characteristics at the school zone that might have affected driver’s speed.
