I come from a Vaishyas caste and my parents follow tradition that was set by the previous generation. In the modern society, things have changed rarely anyone follows those set rules except for fundamentalist that would remind others about caste when they do not succeed in life. The reason why I emphasized on the caste system was because recently(July 2015) a community called Patidar, also known by their last name Patel, were declined to get a public job or attend school because they didn’t qualified in the reserved seats. In the state of Gujarat, India, 27% of seats are for Other backward castes, 7.5% for Scheduled Castes, 15% for Scheduled Tribes.(a)(b). These castes get their seats in schools and public jobs first, even though they might not be qualified or have proper grade to be in the school whereas Patidar were just rejected due to their last name and do not get the job or the enroll in the school they want to, which led to a protest, the problem was later solved by removing the reservation system and offering scholarships to the Patidars student. The caste system is still a problem in some of the states and villages. There is a famous saying in India which is: “We are both divided by caste and united by casteism” which sums up the caste system.(Mohan Vanamalai,

In India and China, “…caste background continues to define opportunities available to individuals” (Desai & Dubey, 2012). Social castes and classes were a very important part of an ordered society in India and China because they allowed there to be different levels of power, and there could be discipline.
