This final project will discuss the music of India, specifically the music that my interview subject, Mr. Ravi David, grew up listening to. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Ravi David, a member of Bayview Glen Church, in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada. He is a retired gentleman who serves as an Elder in my church. He was born in India in the 1950’s and lived there until he old. He was raised in a traditional Indian family; however, he is a seventh generation Christian. Due to his fathers work with the Indian government, he and his family moved around quite a bit during his childhood. This film, and the music within the film, reimagined the classic tale of Austen in a way that integrates the story into Indian culture. This film contains “multiple musical numbers that include oriental rhythms and melodies, however, those sung in English also hint at Hollywood musicals.” One of the pieces, entitled Balle Balle, contains elements both Hollywood and Bollywood. This seven-minute piece consists of what might be considered two separate pieces. During the first half of the seven-minutes the tempo is upbeat, including a hybrid of Western and Indian music with the men and women singing back and forth between one another. During the second half of the piece, the tempo drops to what could be considered a half tempo. In this section of the piece the women sing in a more western fashion before returning to an up-tempo found in the beginning. This piece contains elements of both traditional Indian music, including that of the sitar, tabla, harmonium, and the music of Western culture. This hybrid of music cultures, allow for the music in this film to be enjoyed by those in India, as well as Western viewers as
