India, a country located south of Asia, is such an interesting country due to many reasons. For example, India is known for their spicy foods, culture, music, and the variety of religions people follow there. Other than India’s entertainment, and wonderful culture, the country has some health concerns pertaining to the people of India that live in slums. This paper will help describe India’s makeup by explaining the country’s demographic profile, population, socioeconomics, different health indicators, burden of diseases, and the different types of Millennium developmental goals that the country has.

The infant mortality rate is so high in India, and knowing the causes is crucial in order to help decrease the rate. According to Singh, around 1.3 million newborns die every day in India due to various causes (Singh, 2015). Prematurity, low birth weight, neonatal infections, birth asphyxia, and birth trauma are they main causes of deaths in infants born in India and this is due to the lack of health care access and qualified birth attendants present during labor (For et al., 2010). One of the other key health status indicators is under- 5 mortality rate, and most of the deaths are caused by diarrhea (For et al., 2010). Initially the Rotavirus is what causes the diarrhea in children who live in unsanitary places where clean water and food is contaminated with the virus (Kang, 2013). There are vaccines that help prevent this virus because trying to keep the rural areas and slums clean is not enough when the virus is still being easily transmitted through the children (Kang, 2013).
