India’s capital is New Delhi and the largest city is Mumbai. In India, languages spoke are Hindi, English, Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Kokborok, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Mizo, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. The religions practiced in India are Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jaimism. The President of India is Pranab Mukherjee and the Vice President is Mohammad Hamid Ansari. The Prime Minister is Narenda Modi. The Chief of Justice is T.S. Thakur. The Speaker of the Lower House is Sumitra Mahajan. India’s traditions and customs are keeping a fast, or abstaining from a specific food or drink for a certain period of fast for anytime between 24 hours to several weeks. The main reason for fasting is for religious purposes. There are mentions about fasting in many Indian religious scriptures. As per most Hindu sacred books like the Bhagwad Gita and others, fasting helps create an attunement with the Absolute by establishing a harmonious relationship between the body and the soul. One is expected to live piously, give charity and refrain from eating non-vegetarian food whenever observing fast for a spiritual or religious purpose in India.
