Who am I?
Who am I? This question could be answered in many different ways. I could define myself by my race, location, ethnicity, and gender. I am much more than the color of my skin, the stereotypical labels, religion and people’s assumptions. India Arie said it best in her song “I Am Not My Hair” she stated that,” I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am not your expectations, no hey, I am the soul that lives within.” I am a Christian young woman who finds her strength, hopes, dreams, and goals in Jesus Christ my lord and savior. I find my peace and happiness in other people’s happiness. I love to see the light shine out of others when they are happy. For example, when I see a wedding video of the bride and groom enjoying one another on

When I first began this assignment, I thought that the question, “Who am I?,” was a very difficult one to answer. However, as I began to answer the question, there came to light some interesting similarities. If I were to categorize each of my answers in terms of gender, age, ethnicity, race, or religion, then I believe I only addressed those with the first and fifth time answering the question. My first answer was, “I am a white male American who attends school and goes to work.” That answer provides information about how I see my physical self in context with the culture I live in.…

The statement “I am…” can be answered in various ways dependent on the person. Some people may use terms to represent the things they have experienced in the past that have affected them, whether it be positive or negative. Others may use words to express significant items, literal or figurative, that have changed their lives. Three texts that we have read, “Borders” by Thomas King, “Indian Education” by Sherman Alexie, and “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, all have characters who are changed by some item or event from their lives. All these characters have different “I am...” statements that, ultimately, create their self-definition, “the definition of one’s identity, character, abilities, and attitudes by oneself.”…

Self-identity includes our race, language, sexual orientation, culture, and many other attributes of ourselves including visual components such as body type. But according to Michael Hogg and Scott Reid, categorizing people holds them accountable to other similar groups and depersonalizes an individual person.…

To the ones who believe asking, “What are you?” is a valid conversation starter, I am multiracial and proud, but to simplify my ethnicities to others when asked, I identify myself as Asian. I was stereotyped because of how we are perceived in media and society. I spent years cowering in my own skin because others made me believe I was not Asian because of the size of my eyes, the color of my hair, and my personal interests. I was ashamed of what I looked like since I was convinced it embodied who I am as a person.…

How someone identifies is a complicated matter to dissect. There are an innumerable amount of factors that play into identity, both internally and externally to an individual. The fact that culture is an integral part only adds more complexity, as many cultures are becoming increasingly integrated and globalized with other unique groups. Generally speaking, identity is usually determined, often simultaneously, on three different levels: the national level, in one’s community, and at the personal level of self.…

It is no secret that people have struggled through racism for a long time. Even though, people make it seem like every race is equal and it is not a problem anymore when it is still a huge problem for people of color. On a regular basis for people of color, it is a constant battle with their identity and who they are to themselves and how they were seen in the community. In addition, privileges within races and power that are conceived within those privileges are affecting the people of color. The difficulty to identify oneself, to be able to have privileges, and to be able to conserve power is what keeps racism alive in today’s world.…

For a long time, I had trouble figuring out who I am as an individual. Under the conditions that I grew up in, it wasn’t always as simple as identifying myself by my race. Personal identity is a common philosophical struggle that humans face. What makes us who we are, and why are we here are two crucial questions we have debated over since the dawn of civilization. From birth, we are constantly gaining experience and knowledge not only to survive but also to create our own world-view. Even though we are complex creatures, we have a tendency to categorize the world around us into simple boxes. When a new topic is introduced which doesn’t already fit in one of our boxes, we are offset by this idea.…
