For example, when a human is born, they don’t have the freedom of choosing what parents they wanted or how they were supposed to be raised. That can be merely true, but what shapes a human's’ freedom isn’t determined by past events as determinist would make it seem, human freedom begins when one acknowledges that they possess freedom. William James, states that when a person believes that free will genuinely exist, then the exercise of it is the strongest evidence for its existence (Chaffee 4.4). Therefore, meaning once an individual knows that they have free will and exercise upon it is when the human has discovered their freedom. James then comes to explain why determinist think the way they do by saying that determinist views the universe as actualities: “in which no possibilities exist other than those that occur” (Chaffee 4.4) meaning that everything that occurs, was meant to occur to the human and that the human had no choice of changing this occurrence. This is merely untrue, he argues that the universe is full of possibilities “in which no matter what events have occurred in the past, there are still multiple possibilities in the future” (Chaffee …show more content…
The movement was defined by Sartre as "existence precedes essence," meaning that humans create themselves through free choices and are responsible for who they are. Sartre perspective comes to show that individuals do live in a world of free choice and that it is existent because it takes upon their existence to make their choice moving forward in life. “You are a thinking being, capable of reflective thought, propelled toward a future of your own creation, making free choices independent of any prior influences…whatever influences are part of your history – inborn instincts, environmental conditioning, psychological forces, social influences – you have the capacity to separate yourself from them and to make genuinely independent and free choice” (Chaffee 4.4). Thus, comes to explain how despite any external or internal constraints that could have influenced the individual existences isn’t determined by the individual takes upon themselves to realize they have the ability to remove themselves from anything preventing their freedom and that they have the capacity of making their
