Independence Seaport Museum Essay

Independence Seaport Museum is located at Penn’s Landing along the Delaware River. The museum was founded in 1960 and was known as Philadelphia Maritime Museum before it changed to Independence Seaport Museum. It consists of a museum, two ships called Cruiser Olympia, Submarine Becuna and a replica of Schooner Diligence. The museum is dedicated to the maritime history of the Philadelphia region and other major urban ports along the Delaware River (Independence Seaport Museum). When I first walked in the museum, I saw a lot of ship models exhibited inside. Those models gave us a great illustration about how ships were constructed and were used back then. The museum provided information about what happened along the Delaware River, from Philadelphia up until Delaware City. Most of the information provided on the information boards is the important events that were related to trading business. For example, on March 20, 1978, there was a disaster erupted along the Delaware City waterfront when they were loading thousand gallons of volatile jet fuel at an oil refinery loading dock, which then suddenly exploded. …show more content…
Then I walked into another room, which has a big replica of Schooner Diligence, which was involved in development of early navy towards defending American merchants ship from British, French and Barbary pirates. After touring the museum, I walked to the floating warship, Olympia, which was the earliest intact ship of the American Navy. The ship is well preserved and it gave us the image of how the ship looked like and worked back then.
